OFO is about my experience dealing with obsessive thoughts and compulsive behavior, which can feel torturous, comforting, anxiety-inducing, and relieving.
Playing music has become an amazing way for me to quiet my mind and inhabit my body. When I'm making music, there's nothing else happening, and it's a precious space for me to enter.
The physical act of turning knobs and pressing keys grounds me and empowers me to transform my negative thoughts into something tangible.
My intention for OFO was to create an experience much like the push and pull I feel when obsessive thoughts + compulsive urges arise. Sometimes it feels good to entertain them, and sometimes I witness them dissolve in the light of my awareness, if only for a moment.
OFO is a challenge to myself. It is a meditation. It represents the grey area, where anything can happen.
I recorded OFO live at the Center for Contemporary Music at Mills College one Friday in September while on duty at the Hybrid Studio. Fortunately, Fridays were always slow there, so I decided to experiment with a new synthesizer I'd just bought (a Novation Peak). I fell into a patch that I got lost in almost immediately. I wanted to play with the idea of surrendering to the patch and exploring all it wanted to do...all the places it wanted to go, all the ways it wanted to expand and contract...and then I'd attempt to find my way back to the original sound I found so satisfying.
Thus, OFO was born! I made the recording with my iPhone and then added my own processed breath at the end stages of mixing to create a "synth pad" kind of swell throughout.

I hope you enjoy !!
